Target hiring range for this position will be between $75,000-$110,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Job Summary: 

The Assistant Baseball Coach reports to the Head Baseball Coach and assists in all aspects related to the Baseball program. This is a full-time benefits eligible appointment that is renewable on a contract basis. 

*Willingness and ability to work a non-traditional schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays as required. *

Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA.

Specific Responsibilities:

Coaching

  • Assist the Head Baseball Coach in coaching and training Northwestern’s Baseball team, produce and conduct year-round player development systems to enable our position players and team to compete at the highest level possible this includes but is not limited to working with the other baseball staff and performance staff on a regular basis i.e. strength coach and trainer to produce the healthiest, most functional, highest performing student-athletes we can. 
  • Work with the mental performance coaches to help prepare the team to perform and be the most mentally strong and healthy student-athletes they can be.
  • Perform the day-to-day responsibilities given to you by the Head Coach and perform to the best of your ability each day.

Administrative

  • Must be fully knowledgeable and adhere to all rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big Ten Conference (as applicable), and Northwestern University as amended from time to time.
  • Assist the Head Coach in monitoring the academic progress of the student-athletes, making sure they do the best they can in the classroom, this may include study hall sessions on the road, assisting w teacher communication regarding travel, and time management assistance.
  • Compliance, Teamwork’s ARMS liaison-perform all tasks given to you by the head coach to the best of your ability.
  • Scouting reports, SharePoint, Baseball-drive, Teamwork’s.

Recruiting

  • Recruit talented student-athletes for the Baseball program, identify and contact qualified prospective student-athletes, schedule unofficial and official visits, produce all itineraries, and communicate regularly with coaches of prospective students to promote NU Baseball.
  • Work with the compliance office on the status of all prospective student-athletes and use all systems in place.
  • Utilize ARMS recruiting database, Teamwork’s, or any other systems we use to work with compliance, and track-monitor recruiting activity. 

Student Affairs

  • Demonstrate interest in the academic progress of student-athletes. Work closely with the head coach and academic services in solving and preventing academic problems.
  • Cooperate with team physicians and Sports Medicine staff regarding health care and decisions of practice and participation of student-athletes.

Alumni Relations, Public Relations, and Development

  • Responsible for the maintenance of sound alumni relations. In cooperation with the Athletic Development staff also responsible for promoting and participating in various alumni events.
  • Assist Athletic Development staff in fund-raising efforts on behalf of the Department and the University.
  • Responsible for maintaining good public relations with the public news media, and working with the Athletic Communications staff in promoting Northwestern University.  Maintain amicable public relations with faculty, staff, students and media of the University, friends, alumni support groups and secondary school coaches.

Other

  • Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, training sessions, community service events, etc. as required.
  • Report issues and concerns to the Head Coach and/or Sport Administrator and faithfully and diligently carry out other Department related duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate a cooperative attitude towards all sports in the Intercollegiate and Recreational programs.
  • Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA.
  • Responsible for adhering to all Department and University continuing education initiatives and required certifications and trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned: i.e., summer ball placement, camps, umpire reports, budgets, SID communication, roster management, and field-facility management.

 

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience as a collegiate baseball coach.
  • Previous experience as a collegiate baseball player.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big Ten Conference and Northwestern University preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Willingness and ability to work, as well as travel, mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic fast paced environment and manage stressful situations
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and effectively interact with diverse populations.
  • Ability to establish engaging relationships within and across racialized and other marginalized communities
